Please do not mistakenly pay royalties for making copies of materials on this website: I have elected not to become an affiliate of Access Copyright, so any royalties it collects for copies made (miniscule as that may be) will be distributed among other website copyright owners.

The reason I have declined to become an affiliate is that the model license Access Copyright recently negotiated with the AUCC does a huge disservice to higher education and to long-accepted practices of Internet publication and communications. As the Canadian Association of University Teachers has pointed out, this license defines copying to include "posting a link or hyperlink to a digital copy"; it mandates monitoring and surveillance of faculty and students; it places limitations on our use of scholarly materials in such typical and traditional ways as indexing and storing them; it prohibits our storing of research documents on networks other than those controlled by the university. I am in full agreement with CAUT's position. For more information, see also posts by Michael Geist and Howard Knopf.
